Charisse Nixon
“The Hidden World of Bullying: Covert Crimes of the Heart."
Charisse received her Ph.D. from West Virginia University in Developmental Psychology and is currently an Associate Professor at Penn State Erie. Her primary research interest focuses on covert aggression, including both prevention and intervention efforts.
Charisse's work has been featured in many national venues, as well as published in several peer reviewed journals. She is the co-author of the 2003 book Girls Wars: 12 Strategies that Will End Female Bullying (Fireside, 2003). Recently, with Stan Davis, Charisse is co-leading the Youth Voice Project, a large-scale research project identifying what works and what doesn't work in bullying prevention. Currently, their data set includes over 13,000 young people from 25 different states.
Featured Conference Speakers: Dr. Randy AlexanderRandell Alexander, MD, PhD is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Florida, Chief of the Division of Child Protection and Forensic Pediatrics, and Statewide Medical Director for the Florida Child Protection Teams. He is on the International Advisory Board for the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. He serves as an Executive Councilor for ISPCAN(International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. He has extensive interests in all forms of child abuse, particularly shaken baby syndrome, Munchausen syndrome by proxy, prevention, and child death review. He is an active researcher, lectures widely, and frequently testifies on major child abuse cases throughout the country.

Ross McDonough, LCSW Ross McDonough is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Addiction Professional in private practice in Neptune Beach, Florida. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Social Work at the University of North Florida. Ross has worked in the social work and mental health field for ten years and has extensive training and expertise on Oppositional Defiant Disorder and parenting issues. Ross McDonough has presented on this topic at the state and local level. Ross is certified in the Parent Project and Family Rules intervention curriculums which are aimed at empowering parents of children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
Betty Burney Betty Seabrook Burney is currently a member of the Duval County School Board (District 5). Burney also serves as a consultant for the Center for Reform Governance (funded by the Broad Foundation), where she works with school boards and superintendents to provide technical assistance on governance strategies and practices designed to impact student achievement and to narrow the academic achievement gap. Burney’s engagement with youth and policies and practices have provided her with a clear picture of the challenges and needs youth, parents and communities face. As a result, she has launched a number of initiatives to give voice and significance to youth and the communities where they live.
